Use the camera function in the Shopmonkey for Techs Mobile App to scan the TIN or record the TIN manually to maintain records of the tires sold in your shop.
DOT symbols and TIN
The Department of Transportation (DOT) symbols and the Tire Identification Number (TIN) provide key information about a tire.
- DOT symbol: certifies the tire manufacturer’s compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) tire safety performance standards
- TIN: also referred to as the tire “serial” number, the TIN groups together key tire manufacturing information:
- Group one: 2-3 characters representing the factory code where the tire was made
- Group two: 2-character code representing the tire size
- Group three: up to 4 characters representing the tire type and manufacturer’s code
- Group four: 4 numbers representing the week and year the tire was made (e.g. 0518 would refer to the fifth week of the year 2018)
A full DOT and TIN may look something like this: DOT-MA-L9-ABCD-0518.
Locating the DOT and TIN
The DOT symbol and TIN can be found on the sidewall of your tire and should be facing out from the vehicle.
TIN Scanning
Add a tire line item to an order created in your shop.
Open up the order containing the tire line item in your Shopmonkey for Techs 2.0 Mobile App. Select the tire line item and select the scanner icon. Hold the device so that the camera is directed at the TIN on the tire.
Once successfully scanned, the TIN will then be recorded on the tire line item.
Update the quantity of tires on the tire line item to scan more than one TIN.
Manually Enter TINs
Within the Shopmonkey web application, you can also manually enter the TIN(s) on an order. Select the Tire line item on an order. Update the quantity of tires on the tire line item to scan more than one TIN.
On the right-side panel, find the Tire Identification Numbers section of the Entire Tire Information menu. Manually enter the TIN(s) for any tires sold on this order.
